In spite of receiving thousands of tourists every year, Cusco Cuzco also has one of the highest levels of poverty in the country. This is evident by the presence of hundreds of children living and working on the streets. These children lack a decent education, food and caring, with almost 30% living well below the poverty line.

Our organization, A Broader View provides an opportunity to do something so rewarding, that we guarantee you will never forget it. Not only will you get the most fulfilling experience of your life, you will:
* Give something back to the less fortunate in the world * Build your self confidence and independence * Experience a whole new culture * Gain foreign language skills * Experience a new location from the inside out. * Build your resume and gain work experience * Discover hidden strengths and skills * Expand your global horizons
A Broader View Volunteers is based on the idea that one person can make a difference. By donating your time and skills to a hands-on volunteer project at a grass roots level you too can make an immediate impact. We partner with local NGO’s, private institutions and community organizations throughout the world. An extensive amount of research and time go into each program to ensure the best quality and safety of our destinations, accommodations and projects. Project sites, housing and host families are continuously monitored. Our local partners, like ourselves, are dedicated to providing our volunteers with outstanding service; a quality project and 24/7 support. We work with local partners who are community activists knowledgeable in the needs of their society and offer insight and guidance to our volunteers.
ABV offers affordable program fees. We know you are donating your time and money to volunteer abroad. There are transportation costs, visa/vaccinations expenses to consider, then your everyday living costs while you're away. Since the living costs are generally very low in our host countries, our program fees reflect this. A Broader View strives to offer all people the opportunity to live and work abroad, to experience life from a different point of view and have a life-changing experience
A Broader View Volunteers provide a safe and unique opportunity to truly experience a new culture, learn a foreign language, make life-long friends, enhance your resume AND have a life-changing experience.
Why a Volunteer Vacation?
Volunteering while traveling abroad adds a satisfying dimension to your overall experience. Volunteering creates a feeling of personal satisfaction. It grants you a privilege not afforded to the typical tourist: a unique opportunity to experience local everyday life while making a positive impact. Volunteering abroad immerses you in a new culture which improves your language skills, gives insight of a culture from the inside out and hopefully broadens your view of the World.
Volunteering abroad can be both challenging and very rewarding. It takes a special kind of person and not all are suited for it. The lack of home comforts and infrastructure that many fortunate people brought up in developed countries take for granted can be a strain for some. There are many cultural aspects that you may find unreasonable and puzzling, that you will need to adapt to. The hosting countries of our programs have vastly different practices, attitudes, approaches to life, and language(s). There is the inevitable culture shock of living and working in a non-western country which one can not really prepare for. If you see these new situations as exciting challenges to overcome, rather than barriers, you are on the right track for a successful volunteer program abroad.
Have you ever considered doing one thing during your life that would make a complete difference to a child less fortunate? Have you thought about volunteering – a week, a month or even a year – your time in an overseas orphanage or school? What might seem to you an insignificant amount of time means everything to a child with little – or nothing. If you answered yes to any of these questions, a volunteer vacation may be just for you.
Imagine this:
There are approximately 350 million child-slaves in the world; millions of war-victim children; and starving, abandoned little victims everywhere! The International Labor Organization estimates that 352 million or 23 percent of all children between 5 and 17 years of age were actively working in the year 2006. This is reality - perhaps not in America, Canada or the UK - for millions of children around the globe.
The amount of orphans in the world is staggering. In our host countries where we offer programs, there are over 200,000 Chilean orphans, over 2 million Peruvian street children living in extreme poverty, and an estimated 8 million AIDS orphans in Uganda, Kenya and Ghana.
According to the ONE campaign, "Around the world, more than 100 million children are not in school and more than 60 million of these children are girls. Whether a boy or a girl, every child deserves the chance to go to school and have a hopeful future."
Think about this:
* If you woke up this morning with more health than illness... you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. * If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. * If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world. * If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace you are among the top 8% of the worlds wealthy. * If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.
The children of the world need our skills, spirit, time and support. You too can make a difference. There is only one world - and we are all in this together.
Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one's ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.

Volunteer in Ecuador
Ecuador, a small South America country, is bordered to the north by Colombia, to the east and south by Peru, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. The country is divided into four distinct regions; the Amazon, the Highlands, the Coast, and the Galápagos Islands.
Compared with many South American countries, Ecuador is very small. Nevertheless in this limited area there are at least 50 types of natural terrestrial vegetation, diverse ecosystems and an immense variation in wildlife. Ecuador is one of 17 mega diverse countries in the world according to Conservation International. With 1600 bird species (some 15% of the world's known bird species) in the continental area, and 38 more endemic to the Galápagos. There are also 25,000 species of plants recorded; it has 106 endemic reptiles, 138 endemic amphibians, and 6,000 species of butterflies.
Today, Ecuador remains a multiethnic and multicultural nation, where more than 14 indigenous groups maintain their own traditions and ways of life, to the delight of visitors. The country has a plentitude of national parks, wildlife reserves, natural springs, volcanoes and ecological reserves and beautiful cities. Ecuador gives the tourists a mega bio-diversity and a chance for great adventures in the mountains, volcanoes, jungle, white beaches and exotic islands.
Although in recent years Ecuador has benefited from a rise in tourism offer some economic relief, millions of people live below the poverty line, mainly children. Governmental statistics estimate that over one million children work to survive and maintain their families. Growing poverty, lack of education and limited governmental resources further worsen the problem of street children and orphans in Ecuador. A government study* concluded that 45% of the population between the ages of 10 and 16 are working, 60% of the children under the age of five are malnourished and a third of the population has not completed the first part of their basic education. (*First Congress on Nutrition Development, Quito 2000)
Our volunteer projects allow you to help street children and orphans in Quito, teach English in a local Andes village, work at one of the numerous ecology/conservation bio stations or animal welfare reserves located throughout the Amazon, coastal and Andes regions. Our programs allow you to discover the wonders of Ecuador, while doing meaningful community work. This is a great opportunity to enhance your Spanish knowledge, live with the locals and realize one person can make a difference.

Nepal is a magical Himalayan country with an unusually diverse landscape. Eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are found in Nepal, making it a haven for trekking, mountain biking, and hiking. The country is also known for its national wildlife parks, jungle safaris, river rafting, and its many beautiful temples and places of worship. Nepal offers visitors a mix of ancient and modern with common sites like cows walking down the streets, Buddhist monks talking on cell phones and local children playing on 1000 year-old temple ruins.
The population of Nepal is approximately 27 million people; almost half of them are under 18 years old. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, most people living on less than $1000 a year. Almost 80% of the population still makes a living from agriculture. The rate of unemployment is almost 50% and poverty levels are very rampant. Nepal’s youth is quite large, accounting for almost half of the population. Many children are orphaned, abandoned, homeless and living on the streets.
Our orphanage program, located in Lalitpur (Patan) provides children with basic necessities like education, food, shelter, health facilities, in a nurturing community environment. Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of Nepal.

Ghana is located in West Africa bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Togo and the Ivory Coast.
Formerly known as the Gold Coast, Ghana won its freedom from Britain over 50 years ago, becoming the first black African colony to achieve its independence. Ghana is a proud and safe country steeped in rich cultural history and tradition. The country still boasts 42 European forts and castles including Elmina and Cape Coast Castles which are all recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Monuments.
Vibrant traditional festivals full of pomp and pageantry can still be seen and heard throughout the country. Traditional open markets provide the sounds and sights of the African bazaar. Ghana has a diverse natural heritage which is rich in dense tropical rainforests, unique eco-systems, crocodile ponds, coastal wetlands, botanical gardens and the world largest manmade lake, Lake Volta.
childrenWe have programs available in the HoHoe and Ho Districts of the Volta Region and in Agona Nkwanta of the Ahanta west District. In these districts, 95% of its population lives in rural areas, and subsistence agriculture is the major activity. The poverty experienced in these rural areas is not just a lack of money but also the inability to access basic needs, such as health care and health facilities as well as voluntary HIV counseling and testing.Despite having a lack of such basic needs, the Ghanaian people are world-renowned for their friendliness. Most volunteers are humbled by the everyday happy attitudes of the local people.

Uganda, the land of Lake Victoria, is situated in East Africa surrounded by Kenya, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Rwanda. It has a population of 27 million, over half of which are under 18 years of age. Famously called the "Pearl of Africa" by Winston Churchill, it is home to one of the most diverse and concentrated ranges of African fauna including the highly endangered mountain gorilla and the chimpanzee.
Unlike its neighbors; Kenya and Tanzania with their built up tourist infrastructure, Uganda is still growing meaning visitors can experience "real" Africa. There are bustling open markets, lush subsistence farming, charming rural villages and a multitude of National Parks. Today, Uganda has one of the highest orphan rates in the world, mainly due to the terrible HIV epidemic that has engulfed Africa. There are over 2 million children living with this disease, most of whom are under 15 years old.
We have programs available in Jinja, Kampala and in the rural villages of Mpigi District. In this district, 98% of its population lives in rural areas, and subsistence agriculture is the major activity. The poverty experienced in this area is not just a lack of money but also the inability to access basic needs, such as health care and health facilities, voluntary HIV counseling and testing, as well as basic affordable education for the children.
Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of Uganda. Volunteering in Uganda is a way to totally immerse yourself in East African culture.
